Who were the Vikings?
The Vikings were people from Scandinavia who, during the Viking Age of roughly the late 8th to the 11th century, sailed out on trading and raiding expeditions across Europe and beyond. Most people in Scandinavia at the time were farmers, and the word viking described the expeditions more than an entire people. Horned Viking helmets are a modern image popularized in the 1800s by Richard Wagner’s operas, so the LeafReel Viking look leaves them out.

What does the Viking portrait look like?
The Viking portrait is a cinematic photo: a fur-lined wool cloak fastened with a bronze brooch over leather and chainmail, a few small braids woven into the person’s own hair, a round painted wooden shield on the back, and a rocky fjord shore under a dramatic overcast sky with a longship in the distance. There is no horned helmet, and no beard is added to a clean-shaven face.

Because horned Viking helmets are a modern invention, popularized in the 1800s by stage costumes for Richard Wagner’s operas, not something Viking Age warriors are known to have worn.
